Re: minn kota v Shakespeare?
There really isn't a "versus" choice here as the two brands are on totally different levels.
The question is are you willing to pay for quality, or are you more concerned with a cheap price even if it means lesser performance and shorter service life?
Minnkota is the "buy right, buy once" option. In terms of quality, performance, and longevity no other motors are going to match a Minnkota. I've had 3 of them and I've never worn one out. I would guess that my current bow-mount model has nearly a thousand hours on it. All the serious anglers I know use Minnkota.
If you look at a Minnkoata side-by-side with another brand, the quality differences are obvious. The Minnkota's motor is about twice the size of the other models, even in the same thrust rating. Obviously, there is a huge difference in terms of build quality and performance over time.
Spare parts are readily available, and everything on a Minnkota is built for heavy duty use.
The occasional-use angler who fishes on small, sheltered waters, and not very often, can probably get by fine for a number of years with the cheaper brands like Shakespeare.
It all depends on how and how often you're going to use the motor and how much you value quality over a cheap price.
