Hi was just wondering if anybody knew of any good lochs for fishing for ferrox trout in scotland and what tackle/methods to catch them.

They are just a fish that have always intrigued me as i have heard many stories about the size and strength of these somwhat mysterious fish.

Despite the ignorance shown on recent posts here, i.e. the thread linked in Richard's post, previous discusions - and natural history - show most ferox populations to be a seperate race, slmost a subspecies of Salmo trutta. Evolved to feed on Arctic charr and whitefish deep in many Scandinavian, Highland, Irish, and the odd Welsh glacial lakes, all landlocked since the Ice Age.
There are enough books and articles on the subject; often looking like salmon in their prime, they are not the 'cannibal trout' going backwards in condition that sometimes occur in other rivers or lowland lakes.

'Big black trout'? Not really, not proper ferox. Not where the genuine article exists anyway.

Is the "ferox" trout a subspecies? how does it start life? it doesnt start by eating Char and white fish right off, it must have a start like the common Trutta Trutta,some so-called " Ferox" have been caught on fly, not lures or streamers
one caught a few yrs back on Loch Veyatie rose to take a size 12 Zulu, and there are others, I know Char lochs where the trout are normal average size for a highland loch, it can be a contentious issue, some "ferox" take their smaller siblings so are these " Cannibals" or Ferox? how would you tell the difference?
