Default which rod

just looking for a little advice here, ive been fly fishing for 2 years and as im only young had a limited budget so the only 2 rods i ever had were budget ones. my stillwater rod is from a starter deal and my river rod was a cheap £20 one.

As im taking fly fishing more seriously i want to get better gear and was wondering what the best rod i could buy for stillwater fishing, mostly use lures and dries, and which rod for my local river, at most around 35/40ft width but most of the stretches i fish are around 20ft. im also in need of a couple of reels as mines are crappy starter ones.

Hi buddy, what is your budget, best advice would be to go down to a tackle store and have a go, my mate loves marmite but i hate it we can give opinions but its defo worth having a cast with a couple of different rods to see what you feel comfertable with, i would say spend less on a reel and more on a rod and line.

If you find it hard to decide check out the tackle section, plenty of reviews there mate.

Tight lines

Agree with welshy 1347, best to have a wee cast with a rod and make sure it suits you, I have wasted money in past buying a rod that did not suit me.
If I were you I would go to GAC, the guys there are very helpful and, you will get a chance to have a cast in their strip of water at the side of the building.
Good luck
Bobby

Mark, rods can be quite personal. If a shop is unwillling to let you try a rod don't shop there for rods. I would risk the trip into Glasgow better to get lost for a couple of hours than to chuck away £200 notes on a rod you don't like.
There area couple of online companies that will send you rods for approval. You pay for them but if you don't like them so send them back, of course it costs you the postage but its better than being stuck with a rod you don't like.

Cheers

Frank

Going to feel a rod in a shop is top advice. Personally there is a stand out rod in each situation, For rivers the greys streamflex is perfect, for the size of river you are talking about the Greys steamfelx plus in a 3 or 4wt will be perfect. And for still waters the Greys XF2 in a 10ft 6 or 7wt is ideal and will cope with all situations. I would still go and look at the rods but I would definitely have a good look at these.

I find recommending rods subjective. however the section of river you intend fishing is most frequently fished with 9ft, 4 and 5 wts for the Broons
One of the most successful anglers up there uses a Shakespeare Odyssey which are great little rods and well within your proposed budget.

I bought an 8ft & 9ft Streamtec halfway through last season & love them. Before this i was using a Sage Fli & seemed to be bumping off too many trout.I have a 10/4wt Streamflex but thinking about buying a 10/3wt Streamtec.I am surprised you don't see them being recommended much as they seem like a good rod for the money.I wish they would bring out an 11/3wt for £69.
