Default Dry Fly Dressing

Although I only fish small to medium lakes, I like to use a dry fly when there's a chance.
What does everyone use as a dry fly floatant as I'm not sure which to buy.
Seen a silicone which seems a good buy, but there's others out there and it gets a tad confusing.

I use Gink. Other swear by Dilly Wax. Beware of floatant oils such as CDC oil, they leave a slick around the fly.

On the fly tying bench after the varnish has dried I use Watershed, thanks to recommendations on this forum.

By the water I dry soaked flies with Amadou and might reproof them with Supafloat from Halstead and Hartley or Loon Aquel and a shake in Loon Top Ride. I also use Frog's Fanny.

In other words there is a good chance you might end up like me and never be satisfied with floatants available today and will end up trying them all.

I wish Richard Walker's original Carbon Tetrachloride type Permaflote was still available. It was easily the best ever.

I use to use gink but switched to CDC oil and have seen zilch decrease in catch rate but a large increase in floatation time. The secret to CDC oil is to apply only a very small amount on your fingers, rub it around and then apply to the fly.

Take care

Watershed after tying the fly.
Gink, warmed up by rubbing between finger and thumb, on the bank.
