Default Winter Clothing - Must have's??

Hi All, Last year having gone through the "Which Gloves" and "Which Wellies", are the ones you'd suggest using and keep you warm. I Thought I'd ask you all.

What is the one piece of Winter Clothing - must have's, that you wear to keep you on the bank and fishing.

Hats are always good, especially if you are folically challenged like me. Pictures would be great too. Any suggestions or links to great gear would be fantastic!!

Best Regards

Stuart

Perhaps someone should start a perament seasonal clothing post

1. Wool "glomitts"-- mittens that have the flip-open mitten flaps that reveal half finger gloves. The thumb can also be opened.

Absolutely essential for winter fishing and the only thing I've ever found that really keeps my hands warm and still allows easy fine movement when necessary. Because they are wool, even if you drunk them in water, simply giving them a good shake forces most of the water out and they retain their insulating power even when damp.

2. For those who have to wade to fish in the winter, a separate pair of oversized wading boots specifically for winter. If you simply try to cram more and thicker socks into your normal wading boots, you are restricting the circulation and therefore making the problem of cold feet worse instead of better.

Having a pair of boots 1 size larger and wider if possible, allows you to put on that extra-heavy pair of wool socks without this circulation restriction.

Also, make sure this winter pair of wading boots has rubber soles AND studs. Felt soles are absolutely lethal in the winter and IMO they should never be worn if there is any ice or snow present on the banks.

3. Again, if wading and venturing away from vehicles or ready access to shelter, all of your clothing should be wool or synthetics that can be wrung out and put back on should you take a dunking. Cotton kills. Wool and synthetics like polar fleece retain their insulation value even when damp.

Anyone venturing away from shelter in the winter should make sure they are taking the needed precautions. carry a survival blanket. Don't rely on a mobile phone as your only means to get help. Fish with others or make sure someone will come looking for you if you do not check in at a certain time.

I have worn felt soles in Winter. Really dangerous, more so on grass. Eddie the Eagle comes to mind, especially as the river comes up to meet you sliding down to it.

Best regards

Surgical gloves work a treat. The water doesn't evaporate on your skin to turn your hands cold.
