hello folks, Got a question for you all how would you go about trying to catch brown trout out of a still water stuffed with rainbows ? is it just chance ?

I would try traditional wets, i can usually tempt a brown from such waters with them, invicta or black pennel would be my weapon of choice.

Cheers Colin, i fished Haylie last week, though i wasn't even aware George had brownies in it, i'll bear this in mind at the end of this week when i re-visit Haylie.

The wets have worked for me in some of the 'mixed fish' Central Scotland fisheries, Swanswater Wellsfield Bangour etc.., i began my fly fishing adventure many moons ago on a strictly brown trout club loch, though these days they also put in bows, roll on the brownie season.

on the rare occasions i have caught brown trout from rainbow trout water its just been luck. ive had a take and lures and a few on buzzers or the first cast but if your specifically targetting browns from rainbow waters youll have a hard time as most broonies in stillwaters up here are misspicks from suppliers or or long term residents of the water

Jim, i fished Swanswater last week (Just a one off) and got 2 broons on a gold head damsel with extremely dark marabou/ rabbit dubbing and hackle, one was 21/2lb

If a water is 'stuffed with rainbows', I think it is mainly down to luck, personally I have had very good success with buzzers, but then I fish these more than other flies anyway so chances are that's what I will take them on.

Personally I spend quite a bit of time 'walking the water' with Polaroids and do get opportunities to target browns when I see them; many in our water are older resident fish who appear to carve out their own territories. On a number of occasions I have seen decent browns during the evening rise and have either been fortunate enough to catch them or have sometimes caught them on a subsequent trip when fishing in the same location.

hi guys iam talking about new haylie you can spot some nice browns to 5-6lb off the dam wall , one summer day i spotted a brook trout at the corner of the dam wall just before the bridge and i tried every fly in my box to catch it but no success

Not all luck at all. I had 12 browns and 0 rainbows out of Lechlade this spring, by deliberately targeting them.!

Look close in, certainly at the drop off. brownies will cruise the edge of the drop off. also look amongst structure, under trees, overhangs or anywhere it's difficult to cast. I like a deep hole, close in, that's got a fair bit of overhang.. NEVER whip your fly off the water, particularly when fishing deep. draw it up sloooowly and often you'll have a great white mouth following.

Typically, i find the browns will be under the rainbows, so don't bother with fiddly small flies. fish it deep, slow, close in, and among the debris and you'll pick them up.
