9.5' or 10' 6/7 would be an all rounder.

Alf... what are you going to be fishing for in the rivers? Also... if you tell us where/what sort of sized rivers you are intending to fish then we can perhaps advise you better.

Also a budget would be helpful, the reel is not so much an issue providing you have a few spools for different lines.

Alf

Welcome!

That is a rather difficult question as the two styles are so very far apart.

River rods range from tiny rods of, perhaps 7' #0 (7 feet high and a 0 weight) to, at most maybe a 9' #5 or 6 on larger rivers - this being a very general view.

Reservoir rods are typically 10 foot rods and either 6, 7 or 8 weight with the 7 and 8 weights being more common to handle the heavy sinking lines.

Depending on your budget, many anglers on here will recommend some of the excellent but relatively cheap Fladen or Shakespeare rods for river work and can be had for around £30 or so. Coupled with a wee cheap graphite reel and one of the Pitsford Pirate (a chap on here) floating line and you can have a perfectly serviceable river rig for £60.

A ressie outfit can be a bit more costly but, again, it can be done on the cheap to get you going. You may wish for a rod and a reel with at least 3 spools for a floating, intermediate and sinking line.

Personally, I feel that the two methods are too polar to be covered by one rod. If you were asking for a rod and reel to cover Stillwater and Ressies then that would be easily done.

Perhaps if you let us know where you live, someone may be able to assist you better ?

Hi Sprinter welcome to fly fishing

i would recommend taking to anglers from the area you are fishing as these will give you more information on the the type of tackle needed for the fishing you are about to do. Also go to a well renowned Tackle Shop in the area as they will be able to help you on selecting the type of tackle needed and if you can maybe bring an angler with you to help get started.

9ft mid to tip action #5.

You will need one of these anyway and it makes the best all rounder so just go out and get one. Use the cheapest plastic reel you can find and get a WF5F floating line in brown or drab green to start you off.

If your budget is tight PM me your address and I'll send you a secondhand line with a few years left in it to get you going.

Hi again Alf... Ben's advice is good stuff. When I started river fishing for trout and grayling I used an 8ft 6 5wt which served me very well on most medium to large size rivers for dry and nymph fishing. I still think this is a good place to start. As my confidence developed I wanted to broaden my horizons a bit and now I have a range of rods from 6ft 3wts to 10ft 8wt - horses for courses.

Have a scan through the classifieds here there are often some bargains to be found.

As Ben says, reservoir fishing is a different discipline, and the quarry are going to be very different - probably larger fish. So you are going to want something with a bit more oomph. I don't fish still waters so haven't a clue how best to advise you except that a 7ft 3wt might not be your best option

Hi

if you are going to be fishing rivers like the Swale and Ure I would go for a 9ft 5wt for smaller streams around you an 8ft 4 wt would do nicely.. I would suggest the latter as a rod that will cover most eventualities for you ...

Andy
