Default Anyone make their own fly boxes?

I like to save money where possible (yes im tight) and i have come across many types of box/containers while searching through the house/shed that could be suitable for use as fly boxes.
What I’m after though is some dense foam to keep the flies stable. I have polystyrene which will crumble too easily and I have pipe lagging but again this may be too soft.
Where would be my best bet – a craft shop or DIY shop maybe?

Anyone else make their own?

I converted an old wooden float box to a fly box. I used some packaging foam that a computer came packed in and glued it in with hot melt glue.

It's not as good as the proper stuff, but it's not bad.

I made this one a while back for large streamers. The floor tile in the background is 1 square ft.

That is a colourful box of streamers, S Fontinalis! The black ones could have come out of mine, but I particularly like the double toned in the middle row. Are those made with different colours of rabbit strips turned around the hook shank?

For large boxes, I do as Steve but with (well ventilated!) cigar boxes. You can find them in any good cigar store for free (if you kindly ask the shopkeeper). Whenever I go fishing, I put the flies I need in a smaller box. Hate it when the hackles get crushed, the wings flattened or the tails bent.

Thats the stuff i was looking for but couldnt find it anywhere....I'll be getting me some of that. The foam i used was kids foam floor tile, and cut it (roughly) to shape, then stuck it in with 3M super 77 glue. Plastazote is the way forward, thanks for the link.

They sure are, well, at least 1 color rabbit strip and marabou for the neck, but i suppose you could use two colors of RS, or two tone RS though the two tone won't give as much color definition and separation. They're called Voodoo Leeches. I did a step by step for tying them here. They're big suckers!

I've used old vhs boxes, lined with cut offs from an exercise mat -£2 on sale at Sainsbury's.
They are ok for pike flies.
