I use a hazel walking stick from the stick and cane shop cost me all of £13. Still going strong after 3 seasons hard abuse.

Ive heard a few people say dont get one that extends/folds because when you really need it it could collapse. Id recommend getting a proper stick like tony says. You can get them from outdoor shops or you could get one made from a local stickmaker if you fancy something a little more personalised.

When you need a wading stick , you really need one.

Get a Sharpe's Spey stick , and one of these to keep it to hand.

Wading Staff Retractor

Think J.Norris do both.

Dave, for the last four years I have been using a Leki type stick, and it is brilliant, never collapsed on me, but gives me help with balance and feeling ahead in coloured water.
I have, and use a "proper" wading stick, ie a heavy metal one designed for salmon fishing in strong currents, but for general wading in a normal river/stream the Leki type is fantastic.
You can easily buy a rubber end for it if you feel it necessary.

Apologies I told you hazel, it was chestnut here's the link
The Stick & Cane Shop Chestnut Hiking Stave

I also got the rubber ferrule to go on the end.
My mate uses the collapsible ones, they're pain to pull out of the mud.
plus there's a tendency to keep it folded up on the belt.
I added a small ring into it just below the leather strap, the type you just screw in then attach my lanyard to that.

i am with mr T on this one....when you really need one it tends to be in fast water its got to be heavy and attached with a strong cord. I use a black metal one with a heavy brass section on the base....i attach a rubber walking stick thingingbobber to stop noise. I dont think a hazel twig would be much use on the Tay in spring.Downside ....needs a sherpa to carry it to hill lochs that is where the alloy hiking pole comes into its own.

Steve
on your Leki stick was this just the basic I see Amazon do loads
but is yours ridged or telecop
I have a Telecop Hiking stick ( left it in Bulgaria ) which I used when fishing out there in the rivers
Did think it was quite good but just wondered if there was something a little better.
seen the ones like a snake but think they are a bit to many bits that you could get into problems with .
In the end its maybe with you fill you are happy with to stop ending up swimming with the fish
