Default Newbie to the Forum - A beginner who's caught a few fish ! Moving from still to running water ??

Hello All

I'm brand new to the forum, I've been reading a while but never got round to registering until now.

I'm relatively new to fly fishing although I have caught a few nice fish from Loynton and Bransford fisheries.

I have also started tying a few flies but my sausage fingers are proving to be a bit of a hinderance !!

Anyway - I am getting the hang of still water fishing but my folks have just bought a caravan up in north wales and there are a couple of fishing clubs with beats on the mawdach and other rivers near to it and I want to venture onto running water with a fly for the first time this year.

Firstly does anyone know if there's anywhere around the stourbridge area that I could get a bit of local to home practice in on running water.

Second, what techniques am I going to need to learn, develop, read up about and practice to make the trip successful

And thirdly - on a slightly different tack - where do people from around the west midlands go and fish in case I've missed a hidden gem.

Thank you all in advance for your help. Looking forward to contributing and learning from all of you guys on here and who knows maybe fishing with some of you !!

Matt

Hi,
welcome to the forum. It's a big jump from still to flowing water, things move so much faster!! The link below has some excellent advice given to me for nymph fishing on a river, very simple to try and very effective, especially the youtube link by PaulG. It's only a small part of river fishing possibilities, but very engaging and ideal to start with. Works on trout, grayling, and probably other fish in the river.

Good luck!

Simple advice for grayling fishing at Bolton Abbey.

Hello Matt welcome to the forum. Here is a series of short blogposts that take you through the process of migration from still waters to flowing waters. Just click newer post at the bottom of each post to be taken through the series.

Thanks all for the welcome and thanks to Richard and Courty for the links. Lots of studying to do there. Anyone know anything about the Dolgellau Angling assocation waters ??
