Default why did you start fishing?

Can anyone remember why they started fishing?

My memories are of a childhood catching newts from the local pond that wasn't fished.
Followed by a daring mile trip with friends to the nearby head waters of the Nene , armed with a cane, bent pin and bread for bait. ( sticklebacks were caught ).

Finally at twelve years of age I went spinning for Pike.

But for the life of me I can't remember what motivated me to do these things.
Nobody in the family fished.

What made you start fishing , accident or design?

Back when I started it was basically for food, something that had always been done in the family for generations.
But that was worm and sea fishing.

I read Mr Crabtree goes fishing, by Bernard Venables, in the newspaper and was inspired to go and make my own fishing rod from a tank aerial. At twelve my family moved to Langho nr Blackburn and I got my first split cane spinning rod and fixed spool reel. I fished the Ribble and Calder with the local lads and my angling career really took off.I got my first fly rod, a Sharps Scottie, at fourteen.I've still got both rods that are now over 50 years old.

A mate of mine was mad keen, but I always said he'd never get me interested as it was boring... Then he moved to a narrow boat and let me spin for pike one afternoon.

After that I was hooked (pardon the pun) and now find fishing the most relaxing and enjoyable pastime. Just bought my 1st fly rods and plan to spend a lot of my fishing time targeting pike and other river fish on the fly.

1st fishing memories are of going Tickling with my Grandad in the River behind his farm must have been around 5years old, Then I kept on at him to take me with him fishing and began to tag along to Llyn Celyn and the Welsh Dee (only the Garden Fly at this point) First time fly fishing would have been around 1980 after getting a 8foot Bruce and Walker for my 8th Birthday.

I started with a group of like minded mates as a 10/11 year old on the canals and reservoirs around Manchester, we caught the usual species Perch, Roach, Pike and all ended up getting Tropical fish tanks too, we were fish mad! I cant explain why but I was fascinated by fish and loved the outdoors, still do

My Dad took me and my brother to some small factory lodge to catch Perch and Roach when I was about ten. I didn't get into fly-fishing until 2008 when, on a three family camping trip in The Lakes, Noeyedeer (formerly of this parish) lent me his 8' 4wt to fish Ghyll Head.

As to 'why' I think it's for that magic moment when something living attaches itself to your line. It's powerfully addictive!

My first memories are of freezing days, spent in a boat on a lake with my uncle. Tied to the bench with a three piece bamboo rod clenched in my frozen hands. That was 48 years ago and I never looked back. I made it my (only) hobby, eventually my work and when I reflect on it now my life. Why? I wouldn't know, I like the solitude, the quietness, the mystery of water and what lives in it. Some friends say I turned into a fish. I certainly jumped in feet first and I'm still wet behind the ears.
