Default A question about setup

I fish stillwaters with a 10ft #7/8 rod with #7 line and 5lb fluorocarbon from line to fly. I have had fish to just over 3lb but would this setup handle fish to 10lb or would i need to up my gear or just my fluorocarbon.

On the other side of things i am thinking of fishing a #4/5 rod with a single buzzer what lb fluorocarbon would you recommend.

Thanks Brett.

I think you may need to up your line strength but it is possible although some may not recommend it.

However, in the politest manner I can muster, it also depends on your skill level and whether you wish to release or retain the fish.

Some fisheries insist on a minimum line strength so always be aware of fishery rules.

There are some very good Fluorocarbons out there that will have the same thickness as popular brands but be far stronger in their breaking strains. This means you can still fish a fine diameter but have a greater breaking strain to rely on.

A 5 weight set up is great fun and a single or team of buzzers can work well on it. Also small lures and nymphs too.

Hope this helps

I would say that most likely you would have uprate your leader if only for fish welfare if you are planing on releasing it. it will also depend on the action of your rod. A soft rod will protect lighter tippets whereas a stiffer rod has less give meaning you will have to let line out to compensate. Even the drag on the line being pulled through the water puts strain on your leader. As you can see there are quite a few variables to be weighed up. Jon

With 5lb line you should be able to land a 10lb fish, depending on how adept you are at fishing, though most fisheries that i know will insist on minimum 6lb breaking strain.

As SKB said, check out the fishery rules re: breaking strain of fluorocarbon/mono i personally won't go below 6lb. Bear in mind lot's of stillwaters can have some big lumps of fish in them (hate to think of fish swimming around with stuck flies, and trailing mono)

My personal weapon of choice is a 9ft #6 rod, i find anything above that is overkill unless you're fishing Di7 or extra fast sinking lines or heavy lures.

Once you fish buzzers, you will never go back to the dark side

Best regards
Jim

Thankyou for a quick reply. I always release fish but their are a few places i would like to fish with bigger fish than i am use to. I have only been fishing for about 6 mts but would like to buy a line even if it sits in my pocket for another 6mts just as a backup. Thanks again Brett

5lb should be fine for 10lb fish, but as mentioned a stiffer rod tip will give less buffering. I course fish and when targeting pike and zander tend to use a 15lb mono with a 30lb trace and landed a 31lb best early last year.

Hi 13ett

I caught a 22lb rainbow on 8lb line bullying it quite hard as it was compulsary c&r so its not too much of a worry on breaking strain in saying that I was broken by much smaller fish that day too probably bad knots on my part lol

Thanks for that i feel a little more confident about breaking strain now. I have had a 20lb carp on 12lb line before i started fly fishing but trout just seem to fight like demon's. I know its lighter gear but they fight like hell then jump out not seen a carp try that.
