Default Saltwater fly fishing for mullet, help

Hi all
Was looking to branch out and try some mullet fishing next season. Having never fished in the sea I am a complete salt novice so need as much info as possible.
I'm currently living in Belfast so anywhere within an hour worth giving a chuck. Is there a close season,or is there a particular prime time. Should you fish when the tide is in or out, does it matter? Will my normal 7weight trout out fit work, am a bit cconcerned about the effects of salt on my gear and waders, should I be? Thanks
