Default My first trout on the fly

I had a great day out today at Coltsford Mill in Oxsted, Surrey - only my second time fly fishing after getting a rod etc. for christmas. Here's a brace of rainbows I pulled in - can't wait to cook up these bad boys!

I'd like to thank Alan at the Mill and everyone i met there for being so kind and generous with advice - also, thanks to those on this forum for the advice, and also Pitsford pirate for the great lines he supplied me and platinum tackle for sending me end bits over xmas

One thing that threatened to ruin my day was my fly rod snapping (I'll post separately on that - thinking it was the 'gold head' striking the rod on the cast, it broke under a ring about 2 feet off the top of my (seven piece 9 foot) number 5 rod - worried I won't be able to get that exchanged for free under warranty by Sonik without paying loads of money for a replacement etc.) but won't let that spoil things. Was a bit poor though as its only the second time i've ever used the rod - better not tell my wife as it was her xmas present to me - and an expensive pressie too!

tight lines

Jon

PS - thats an oversized dinner plate in the photo, not a saucer :-)

Great news, and, however bad your casting may be, your rod should NOT be breaking on your second outing, 2 fish is very good for your 2nd time, all we need now is too get you into fly tying (I dont think i would tell your wife the price of the stuff you need for this! ) Think about gettin a smoker, when you smoke your trout it tastes ten times better than cooking in the oven or baking/grilling it, again congrats, a day youll never forget

Well done that man. The memory will last much longer than those fish will on your dinner plate.

Well done, man, nice brace of trout.

I'd say you should be entitled to a free replacement on the broken part of your rod.

thanks guys! I'll keep you posted on how i get on with Sonik once i speak to them next week. It snapped whilst pulling fly line through the rings prior to casting, it wasn't twisted line round the rod or the leader loops catching.

Tying (and definitely smoking - though I live in a flat!), are already very appealing to me....must look out some good baking / poaching / grilling recipes meantime....think I'll go classic with some jersey new tats and an almond butter sauce...
