Hi, I have a little experience at fly fishing [a couple of times and once with my oldest son]. We both got some gear for xmas [shakespeare Odyssey rod 2.70m AFTm 6-9, Scierra c-lite 7-9 reel {for me}, Shakespeare mustang spring drag reel {for him} tri angle net with a 2.2m reach telescopic handle]

So set up but need to know how to fill the reel I see in the forum that you use a spare and then fill rest with backing then use it on the other reel but I have already filled a reel with backing so was wanting to know about how much should it fill the spool by [the mustang reel] 50m but looks half full is this ok?

Depends what line/s you are loading.

If a floating line, only load the arbor between 15 and 20% depth, 20 to 30% depth for an inter, up to around 50% depth for a sinker.

Lines get thinner the higher the density, so less backing required.

Care not to overload, otherwise the line will catch and get damaged, yet too little backing will cause memory/coiling in the line.

Hi, Thanks for all your replies [and nice welcome] and to you PitsfordPirate for your help . I have seen your name pop up quite a lot and always positive about your fly lines so thanks again.

Next question lol which end is the end for the backing on a wf line is it the thinner end?

Most new lines have a sticker on them stating this end to backing,otherwise it will be the thinner part of the line.If you have got it right you should wind on about 17yds or so of the thinner line then it will gradually get thicker for a few feet and level off for about 12yds,then taper back down to the point.Attach your leader to the point via a braided loopor nail/needlle knot it straight on.

My nephew (lop lug) on here has just started with fly fishing and I think he will say its easier to see first hand how to fit lines braided loops etc is worth hours of reading.

Thanks for all your help. I am finding this very useful so thanks stevie as the lines I got were slight seconds so had no stickers on them so the advice helped a lot.

And yeah that would be cool I'm more north cornwall but been to tavistock before so can come over nearer you guys Marazion midge and zimtrout where abouts do you guys fish?

The plan is when set up and ready is to fish at free places and at fisheries so any help is welcome as not done any catch and release and looking at the licence rules it's such a mash of red tape though obviously fish stocks have to be looked after.

Next thing just to make sure, I got my backing on line on. And now it's the leader then fly/flies is that correct or tippet or is that the same?

[I got 6 lb 50m dble strength fly leader and the line is slight seconds from the maker that advertises in the trout fisherman mag wf8 son has floating and sinking and I got inter wf8, and a airflo polyfuse wf6 and a cheap backing for now.]
