Default 7wt?

Hi guys i am new to the forum and would like to wish everyone a very happy new year
I have a bit of a dilema i use a sage xp 9ft, 6wt for most of my fishing on my club water would this rod handle a 7wt line the reason i ask is i bought a greys xf 2 ,7wt 9ft6 and found it to be like fishing with a poker. differant animal all toghether.
it would cast superb but it seemed a bit to powerful for 2 to 3 pound stockies
the res i fish is dingle res in lancashire its not a small water but found trying to fish lures on a 6wt rod with a 6wt line in the wind a bit of a problem hence would a 7wt line help or damage the rod
also found the 7wt very tiring to use all day but my 6wt not a problem
thanks in advance

Yes a #6 Sage XP will handle a #7 line no problem, the rod will load quicker and also cut through a stiff breeze better but there may be a compromise in distance and presentation.

Have you ever had a casting lesson or some qualified instruction?

May help a great deal.

Hi and thanks for reply
i have never had casting lessons
i seem to do okay with the 6wt casting drys
the 7wt line would only be used for lures so presentation should not be a problem i was just a bit concerned about breaking my xp as they are getting thin on the ground

Welcome to the forum, I have fished dingle a good few times and I know what you mean about the wind!
I second the advice about a casting lesson too, I had a lesson off Chris Aldred (Chris68 on here) to help me cast into the wind and it was the best fly fishing investment I have made.
He gives lessons in Abbey Village so not far from Dingle and I highly recommend him.

I think the advice to seek casting lessons is sound, you should be able to cast small lures with a 6 weight quite easily.
My Sage Rpl+ 9'6" 6 weight casts an Airflo delta 7-8 Di5 sinker with standard lures easily, why not try a 7weight sinker for lures , the rod will take it and anyway they do have a lifetime guarantee! .
