Default Scourie Hotel/Sutherland fishing

Please can anyone give me some info on this area.
I can't afford to stay in the hotel so may be camping but would like to know how I get to fish the area.
Thanks
Frank

campsite is a short walk from the hotel, permits at the petrol station next door, if you check a map you will see a b road looping round, good place to park.

you can also get a permit to fish the hotel lochs from the hotel the morning after the board master has chosen theirs, if there are any left, its worth asking even if they make you feel like your asking for the left overs from their evening meal.

expect to get lost

Brilliant and thanks for the prompt reply, do you reckon April may still be a bit early for the trout?

Cheers

Yes, afraid so.

You'll find that 'Spring' comes very late that far North. I've fished quite a lot in Sutherland and I'd recommend that you hold fire until early to mid June. I don't want to rain on your parade but there'll be a better chance that the fish will be in good order and there'll be insect life about.

I've fished up on the Rhiconich side in May and it was really hard going. The family I was staying with didn't bother fishing, but the chap did row for me, as I was there to fish. We had a few tiddlers from sheltered lochans on small marabou tail lures but most of the weekend was spent in the Rhiconich hotel thawing out. I wouldn't go back up so early.

Aye I have fished in a snowstorm in late May up there.... June onwards north of the Caledonian Fault Line for me. We are heading up to Lairg in June...that month picked with conditions in mind. Even then June can still be cold the lochs seem two months behind the central belt.

That far North there's the saying ..."If you don't like the weather, wait a minute!"

I was in the Assynt area during the middle week of June some years ago, there was still snow in the corries. On the Monday it rain heavily all day. Tuesday, it was so hot up in the hills that I was sunburnt by lunchtime and retreated down to Inchnadamph. Wednesday, it snowed and Morrison supplied hot water bottles to the hotel guests.

I love wild camping ... Scourie in April? No thanks.

I was on Stack a few years back in June. It was a really bad couple of days with gales. We fished the shallow lies opposite the boat house where there was a little shelter. We decided to call it a day when there were huge water spouts forming not too far from us. The noise of the wind funnelling between the mountains was something else. Never seen a boat rowed so fast in my life. First and only time I've ever seen anything like it.

The weather can be good early on too - I've had some storming days early on in the season. Mildish weather in jan / feb / march influences the fish on the take. I wouldn't completely rule it out for late april / may ; if you can wait and see what the winter does.
