I was mentioning some somewhat similar fly hooks to Colinmac of this Parish. He said that they were good for getting takes but boogers for hooking.
I'd be interested to hear if you have the same experience.

2 words....... DONT STRIKE! try and keep in toutch with the fly on a floating line. just watch it tighten and lift gently.

I've used circle hooks fishing for bass, pike and perch.

I don't use them in waters where I'm likely to encounter trout.

The hooks need an 'edge' to rotate around, ie the lip of the mouth, most commonly the scissors.

They will pull through a 'tube' without engaging.

That is great when there is a risk of deep-hooking, eg the hook will usually pull back up from a pike's gullet, and only engage when it draws around the scissors of its mouth, so timing of the 'strike' is not critical.

(In fact striking is a no-no when using circles. Striking usually pulls the hook out of the mouth without it hooking up. Rather you wait until the fish starts to pull the rod tip around, then gently lift the rod).

What I've found when worming for perch is that for some reason nuisance trout are almost always hooked at the back of the mouth.

Circles need to be rolled out of the hooking wound, and so it needs forceps to take them out from the back of a trout's mouth, and that's not easy way back there. (As opposed to a simple and quick removal of a J hook using a disgorger).

So, when I'm worming for perch and trout are as likely, the circle hooks stay in the tackle bag.

As already mentioned, the carp hooks aint proper circle hooks.
The design of the circle hook is for use in bait fishing, they hook the fish without striking, when the fish takes the bait and turns away, and indeed allows easier release of hook once fish is landed.
The hook basically rolls in mouth of fish till it finds a soft bit then embedds
Striking with a circle hook is an absolute no no. You just pull it straight out of fishes mouth.
Is a hook designed originally to hook Halibut at extreme depths, where striking on take would not embed hook, due to depth, and length of line out, striking on nylon at 100metres down had no effect on setting of hook, therefore the circle was devised, the fish basically hooks itself on moving away.
