Default Equipment for a tyro Fly angler

Hi all,

I hope this is ok to be in this section ( I can't post in the wanted section as I have less than 30 posts).

I met a very nice father and son while out trying to catch a brown trout in the Wandle yesterday. The lad is very keen to learn to fly fish and I said I would be happy to teach them both at one of the put and take lakes near me. My issue is finding a reasonably priced 5 weight set up for the lad. The boy's dad says he has about £50 to spend, so I am looking around for him.
If anyone has any equipment or advice where to look I would be really grateful.

The dad was keen on my 3 weight setup ( I was using it yesterday) but I thought that might be a bit light for all round trout chasing. Do you guys agree that a 9 1/2 foot 5 would be better for ponds and streams?

Thanks for your time.

Tight lines,

Guy

There's a multitude of questions and answers here, but a short answer to your question is yes. Even going up to a 10' #6 would do as an all rounder.

depending on the age of the boy (i.e. how strong he is) a smaller lighter rod might be better to start off.

You can pick up some very acceptable Shakespeare Trion and Odyssey fly rods for as little as £20. Line from the Pirate, cheap reel, should be just about possible? Or eBay?

Thanks for the replies,
I will look to put something together for the lad. I know he is keen to fish some rivers near his relatives house in cumbria, so I thought smaller than a 6 weight. I will look at these rods, get maybe a little rimfly reel or similar I have some backing I could put on there, so then his dad could buy a quality line like a cortland or something. where do I find these "pirate" lines?

Thanks again for all your replies, I really appreciate your time.

Tight lines,

Guy

Do a search for Pitsford Pirate on this forum. Drop him an email.
Excellent lines and cheap as chips. No point spending a lot on line. ATB, Alan

Check out the John Norris online site. They typically have some Shakespeare rods for under £50 as well as discount fly lines.

I recently got a new rod and have a Wychwood Truefly (original model)that no longer gets any use.Its a 9ft rated for a 5/6line which is ok for small stillwaters and could be used on the river as well.If the young mans dad is happy to cover the p+p Iwill let him have the rod free of charge.PM me if this acceptable. Steve.
