Default Lakeland Terriers and Fishing?

Hi, a friend of mine breeds Lakeland terriers and he has a litter of pups who will be ready in about two weeks.

I wonder does anyone have any experience of bringing these dogs fishing? I'd love to get one of these pups and bring him fishing but I'd need to know that it was possible to train him to stay around me and not run off after scents. Though I guess it's hard to expect any dog not to do that.

So can anyone help? Do they have the temperament to bring fishing?

It's how you train him, as simple as that, train and treat him right and you will have a friend for his life. (just hoping you out live him)
Mind you not many fisheries like dogs to be brought!
All the best with him if you get one.
Mike

Ever been up to Bank House? I love the owners dog there, he regularly comes and parks next to you for an hour or so in the hope of a bit of your sarnies :-)

ive got a border terrier, which i was told before we bought her, are very lively dogs and prone to running off after anything that moves, rabbits, squirrel etc.
we started training her right from day 1 and after 6 months she was totally trustworthy off the lead and has continued to be one of the calmest dogs i have had. we made sure to socialise her well and teach her to ignore other dogs, cats , mother on law etc
id say go for it, id love a lakeland.

I've never been but he sounds like a really nice dog. I'd say a fishery is a great place for a dog to live. Happy dog!

Yeah I guess a lot is in the training.
I think I'll get him. I used to have an airedale and lakelands are like small airedales. They were bred from airedales I believe. It was before I fished but he was a lovely dog, very loyal.

My mate had one, absolutely cracking little dog, great with kids.
When it saw a rabbit or a rat, it "went to work" ,however, no problem stopping it.

Real terriers and if my wife would let me, i would have one tomorrow to keep my lab company.

Yeah they sound like great dogs. I'll try and train him to stay around me when I go fishing. If I can't, I'll bring him for walks around the rivers anyway. The best places to fish are often the nicest places to walk too. Plus you can get a bit of scouting done before you come back to fish.

I saw a lab on "A Passion for Angling" who would gently pick up a trout in his mouth and bring it over to his owner to be unhooked and returned. I'd say that would take some training!

If only.

My lab is a beauty but once he sees the river, boosh, in like a flash!
I walk him where i do not fish.

Great swimmer and retriever, major part of the family now.

Mine goes everywhere with me..... if he's not constantly dipping his head in the water and taking out rocks... he's a ****** for trying to get the fish .... not just yours... anybodys!!

Hello,
Firstly plaudits on your choice of dog!! I am very biased.
I have a lakeland cross sprocker ( she looks like a big rough coated fell-type terrier) which is out of working stuff. I will be taking her fishing where ever I am allowed to do so, BUT, she is a working dog and I know she will want to run off, kill rabbits and rats, bark at squirrels and generally be a terrier. I bought her for all these wonderfull vermin controlling qualities so I can't fault her focus in that department. Luckily she is too big to go to ground. If your lakeland pup is a proper working terrier, it will go to ground, that could cause you a few problems.....
If the terrier has the fire ( and proper lakelands are famed for being firey ), in it there is very little you can do to stop it trying destroy vermin, I mean for proper terriers ( not show stock....there's that bias again ), they are "hardwired" to kill small squeaky creatures. If you love working terriers ( as I do) that single minded element of their personality is very endearing. You never know your pup may turn some of your fishing trips into impromptu rat hunts ;-).
As you will of no doubt realised, you will have to "break the dog" to livestock, chickens, ducks, sheep, pigs, cows, goats etc. This is pretty easily done though.

For all her wonderful qualities there are definitely trips when I will be leaving the dog at home, or with family or the missus.

let me know how it goes.

all the very best,

Guy
