Default dry fly floatants

Hi all,
Next year i plan on learning some dry fly fishing.
So my questions for now is, what is the preferred
Floatant liquid (gink) or dryshake?
or does it depend on the fly pattern been used?
When it comes to liquid floatants eg. Gink, how is it applied?
is it a case of covering a fly, one,two drops or depend on pattern?

Thanks for your views

I would use Dryshake to dry flies. then use Gink to waterproof my flies.I small drop is rubbed between thumb and forefinger till they are just moist with Gink,Then this is rubbed onto the parts of the fly you require to float, the fly is then ready to use.
use to much Gink and the fly will sink.

Thanks Jim,
are there certain dry fly patterns you dont use a floatant on?
i think i read somewhere not to use on a CDC pattern is this correct and why?

Cheers

It can clog up the CDC fibres making them useless as a floating medium.I have used it very very sparingly and it has worked.

I'm told that applying gink to a fly that's wet tends to make it sink. Don't know if that's true or not. You can experiment and report back!

That sounds about right.that's why we are carefull in getting the fly dry before application.(but if not slimed,a dryfly can often just be washed in the stream or loch and a few swishes in the air and it will be ready to go)

If you tye your own flies then you consider using Water Shed by Hareline. Dress the fly and then apply to those parts that need it and wait for 24 hours and then angle.

Frog's F**ny for dries.
Easily applied and floats dries instantly- even waterlogged ones.
