Default Over lining rods

I will be starting my first season back on the rivers after years of stillwater fishing, really looking forward to it.

I have a Sage SLT 7'6" #3. I will mainly be fishing nymphs and dries at short distances (approx 15' - 20') roll casting will be the order of the day will I have to over line the rod by 1 weight.

Any advice on what brand of line to go for.

I think I would stick with a 3#, as your only short casting you wont need big loading to shoot your line miles.

You shouldn't need to over line the rod for such short distance casting. However, I would pay attention to your leader make up to ensure that you get good turnover and presentation at short distances.

I use a #4 DT Scientific Anglers Mastery XPS on my 7'3" Sage TXL #3 and it works a treat.

They're on offer at Sportfish right now: Mastery XPS Floating Flylines - Sportfish

For my small stream fishing i do tend to over line my rods when fishing short and roll casting ,works for me and when i find myself on wide open spaces where standard casting methods are called for on goes the "correct" line or even a size down .

I find using furled or properly set up tapered leaders makes more of a difference than over lining the rod. Heavy lines don't turn over flies better

They do make roll /spey casting easier though ,thats often the best way to cover small stream fish .
Spot on re the good leader set up .
