Get the BC Fishing Regulation book which will show all the fishing available in thewhole of BC. When you are there pay a visit to Dave Steele's tackle shop which is on Lonsdale about 5 minutes walk north of the Seabus terminal on the North Shore. If he doesn't know about it then it doesn't exist.

As you have lots of lead in time here's the Board you may wish to join. Very good (and communicative B C fly fishermen) folks:

grayling,

Don't overlook your licences which are going to cost you quite a lot. Back in 2009 - my last trip - it was $80 for the basic Aliens licence which you will HAVE to possess. Don't be tempted to do otherwise! That will cover you for most of your freshwater fishing, including salmon, but not for steelhead. Steelhead licences are another $60. If you then fish any of the Classified waters for steelhead then it's a further $40/$20 a day depending on its classification. If you fancy sturgeon on the Fraser which I can highly recommend then you have to fork out another $15 a day on top of the guide fee which could be as much as $500 a day. It's great fun, expensive, but if you want to catch a fish bigger than yourself then it's worth it as a "special".

BC fishing regs are highly complex so it's worth getting them in advance. Go to Freshwater Fishing Licence for British Columbia

You can get your licences on line as well, BUT where you have to put in your phone number it will not recognise numbers beginning with "0". So, if your number is 01234 567890 put it down as 123 456 8900. It took me a lot of effort to find that out.

I'm planning my next trip in September 2013 which will be a big pink salmon year and therefore should be good for sturgeon as well. I just hope there will have been enough rain up in the north to get the steelies up into the Kispiox.

You could also give the fishbc forum a try. I got a lot of help and advice from some guys on there when I was over. There is a link on my signature. Also the Pacific Angler shop on Broadway is a great shop and the guys there are very knowledgeable and friendly. They also do guided trips.

Cheers,

TS

Reason for that is Canada's 'area codes' are integrated with the US systems. To make a long distance call (a bit different if you're calling Mexico) you just input the #1 before the area code and phone number. The "1" tells the system you're dialing out of your home area into another.

As an example, someone cross country wanted to call me, it would go like this:

1 (tells system this is a out of home area number) 541 (Southern Oregon's area code) 123 4567 (my specific phone number [aka 1-541-123-4567]).

Calling into Mexico (from Canada or the US) is a "11" then area code, etc., if dim memory serves.

And BobP's correct ... if you're not a BC resident fishing there can be darned expensive.

September is a good time to fly fish around Vancouver. You can target salmon & trout on several rivers, there is also great sturgeon fishing but you must use bait for sturgeon not fly. The Pitt River is a good choice for trout, the Fraser River offers great salmon fishing, Harrison River is also go. Pretty difficult to fish Vancouver waters without boat or guide but could be done. This site offers guiding and weekely fishing report blog for Vancouver area for both fresh and saltwater. Like mentioned above, Dave at Highwater tackle also is a good source for downtown area. Here is a nice 30lb Chinook caught on the fly in mid October on the Fraser.

Six of us from Belfast were over in Vancouver/Fraser river flyfishing for two weeks in October 2011, two of whom Vic shows in previous photo. Largest fish caught was 42lb on a 9ft 9weight single hander.
You can self fish, travel, sort your own hotel a lot cheaper than most of these organised trips but a good guide/boat is essential for a lot of the Fraser river fishing.
If you only want to fish and not kill salmon, the licence is 80 dollars although if it is your first time it would be daft not to take a day at sturgeon and hopefully be trailed all over the Fraser by this 9,10, 11 foot monster.

We used STS in 2008 and had an excellent time with first class boats and guides but check on the net, there is plenty of guides there.

Vancouver Island Campbell River is where I've been, fairly close to Nanaimo Ferry back to mainland.ADDED BONUS !!!killer whale watching from a RIB, awsome.
While in Campbell River treat yourself to the freshest simplest seafood ever!!! Patti Finns seafood restaurant. Its on the Marina where you can hire a boat, its at the back of Zellers supermarket on Island Highway Sth.
