Quite possibly neither until the novice in question tries them out or is reccomended one by a guide or instructor.

Never a the best idea to simply buy one off the peg (via the web) only to discover the novice struggles with the rod. It can become a very expensive and frustrating excercise.

In general, a mid-actioned rod is better for a novice as it helps them 'feel' to rod working which is something fast actioned rod wont do. I think the SK8 is a faster actioned rod.

Hope this helps and best of luck in your search.

Rods are not just about how much you pay or a posh name they are about how they feel to use and how they match your casting ability. Both rods are well made and medium range. I suggest you try both before making up your mind. Someone will let you have a go with their rod or a tackle shop may have one or other.

grxi definately slower rod so should suit you better.sk8 is fast action rod.
like ben says try them before you buy see which one suits you if you cant try 1 then i would go for grxi.just my opinion though

good luck

I only started fly fishing in July of this year and i bought a GRXI+, 9"#5 and its a tidy tool. I found it soft enough to feel the load but fast enough to give a decent line delivery. I took some casting lessons from my local fishery owner, who fishes for the England team and he said it was a well balanced/actioned rod.
