Default Suggest a reasonably priced fly tying vice!

I'm finally getting around to putting together a duplicate fly tying kit for the coming season to leave up at my caravan ( where I'll be doing most of my fishing) throughout the trout season. I'll still be tying at home but it will also be handy to have a kit on hand while I'm up there.

I've got plenty of spare kit and apart from a couple of small tools which is neither here nor there, so the only other thing I'm now lacking is a vice to make up the set.

Although it will no doubt come in handy for tying the odd patterns which I can guarantee not to have with me, it will probably only get light use so it doesn't have to be a super-duper model, just one that is sufficiently sturdy and adjustable and which will reliably hold hook sizes from 12 to 18 without any slippage. I've got an ancient spare vice which will admirably allow tying even the largest of salmon flies but, it's absolutely pants at gripping small hooks!

So, if any of the fly tying enthusiasts can suggest a reasonably priced vice that would fit the bill for my spare kit, I'd very much appreciate their suggestions.

Tony

The Weaver Scottie is a very good vice at under £50.

I got one of these a while ago. They occasionally seem to put a few up for £9.99 (what I paid).

I have to say it's excellent although I don't tie in great volumes.

It is identical (as far as I can tell) to the Veniard no 1 but a fraction of the price.

FULLY ROTATABLE FLY TYING VICE WITH BOBBIN CRADLE | eBay

Ideal for leaving in a van and still great value at £14.99.

Have a look at this one, Tony.

Bindestock Danvise Darnica - adh-fishing - Siems GmbH & Co. KG

Don't use it myself, being an old Regal fan but I heard lots of praise from many tiers about this "modern" vise.

Regards,
Johan

Thanks for replying MT...I must confess while I was looking at Don's suggestion on eBay (which I can see is indeed very similar to the Veniard No.1 vice), I saw some like the one you suggested.. but I dismissed them as being too cheap ... however, I'll certainly take a more serious look at the bottom end of the market!

My vice(s) date back to the early 1960's but they were ruddy expensive for a decent one back then so I guess I didn't think modern cheap ones would be any good. Of course there are vices that still cost a hell of a lot and I'm sure you still get what you pay for in the long term but even a cheap one will still probably do just fine for what I need it for as long as it keeps everything firm.

Heck when I first started fly tying as a kid, my dad made me a vice from a pin-vice and slim bent steel bar, mounted on a wooden plynth which served me well for a number of years so I guess even a modern cheap vice would do even better!

Looks a nice vice Endrick, I like the idea of the available base which makes it much more versatile.

Tony a vice is just to hold the hook. You do the tying. Any one of the cheaper vices, should suit your needs, mate.
