A 5wt seems awful light for loch fishing, i use a demon 10ft 7wt with a wf8 line its perfect for loch and breezy conditions,

and my water is on top of the gleniffer braes

in my opinion too many guys are overgunned for loch fishing, most of the guys up my club water use 10ft 7wts not me a 5wt with a little backbone is more than enough,i dont fancy playing 1lb & 2lb stocked browns on a 10ft 7wt,i do alright up my water with my 9ft 5wts it's the biggest line weight rod i own,my mates & me use 10ft 4wt streamflexes wild brown trout fishing from our float tubes it's excellent fishing on light tackle

I must admit I totally agree with craigie on this one... I used to use my xp 10' 7wt but felt way too over gunned once fish were hooked...

I now use a 10' 5wt & a 10' 4wt streamflex and i still catch as many fish as before so I don't think distance is an issue, as these brownies can be very close in but the main thing for me is you feel these stunning little fish go for it...

I've even used my 3wt up there in a flat calm to fish dries-
casting a 10ft 7wt from the bank for up to 10 hrs doesn't appeal to me at all
a nice light 9ft 5wt rod & reel & you can fish all day without breaking your arm-

Craigie, like yourself i don't like to over gun it for wild trout. I use my guideline exp 4 wt matched up with a la master reel. Solid little outfit & at half the price of Hardys.

Craigie, afraid I've no experience of action/lines for a Hardy Demon 9ft 5wt, but just to chip on on the wind/weight discussion: fish are about 1/2 lb average in my local loch. Even a 9ft 5wt is little over the top. But it is windy, so I keep my 8wt in the car for when conditions get totally impossible and I can't get a line out with the 5wt. It's not much fun dragging in a wee half pounder on an 8wt but it's better than not getting a fly in the water at all.
