No, the Stren wasn't 'stiffer' and that was its strength. The ideal attributes of a shooting line should be that it is limp, doesn't come off the reel in coils and when it does tangle (it will) it doesn't produce unremovable kinks.
I still have and use my reservoir boat 'gear', rudder, 'big' rods and lines to match. When Steve Parton first published his book, 'Boat Fishing for Trout', Stren was readily available in bulk spools = 300m or more. It was a simple matter to renew running / shooting lines ... if, over the course of a day, a shooting line became tangled and kinked, it was a simple matter to go back to the bulk spool and load another, new, 50m.
The last time I visited Mr P at his Long Eaton premises I think I had the last of the Stren he had. Subsequently, I have found a new version of yellow Stren via Ebay that seems pretty good but not quite the same. I have a bulk spool of it somewhere in the house - it's in a box following our house move!
A lot of the newer materials, with flattened profiles, are very 'harsh' and plastic by comparison ... and expensive as you've discovered!
