Default How big do your PTNs go?

I usually tie them on #12 or #14 hooks, but I decided that in a bigger size they might be worth a punt in circumstances where a damsel or lure might come out. So I've tied a few with tungsten beads on #10 long shank lure hooks.

Even on these, I can't get the legs a consistent length!

I tied that up for damsel's recently and have used something similar, albeit in different colours before for damsels.

A wee marabou tail would do lovely on one of those nymphs.

14s nymph hook. Copper bead for the head but some pt fibres tied in before the bead then tied over the bead as wing case.

On the rivers I would not go above a 14, but mostly 16 and below, other wise they are not really representative of the natural insects. If I need more weight I would choose another pattern.

Size 8, tied on a low water salmon iron (only thing I had that big), with partridge hackle legs and 3.5mm tungsten bead - fantastic for fishing in really turbulent holes below falls. No idea what they take them for.

Should be worth a try then - I'm thinking of the winter fishing on my local small stillwater.

Roll Cast - funny you should say that, I was looking at them myself and thinking about marabou

Frank - I mostly use them in #12 and #14 for grayling, they do seem to like a nice mouthful.

Matt, fair point, I think in situations like that the fish don't have time to decide. Its more case of eat it or its gone.

Still, personally if I need a bigger fly I go for a peeping caddis or a streamer of some sort.
