One thing i picked up on is building the wood handle after you have the net(material) you will use. Might make things a little too custom if you need to build a net to match the Wood. I f i was to tackle that (exuse the pun haha)
i would get 2 nets so when it was time to replace the cloth it would be easy peasy !

I made one earlier in the year - and lost it last month while packing up

Wooden net

Anyhow, its an excuse to make a new one after xmas

You wont go far wrong following joelwoodworks advice, but theres planty of advice on the web, just pick out the bits you want to apply. The main thing I found was to make sure you select wood for the bow that will steam bend - lots dont! I used white oak and black walnut which both bent quite well. I didnt try to make a hoop to fit the net bag, I made a net bag to fit the finished hoop. The other thing tt watch is, you get literally seconds to bend the wood once you get it out of the steamer. I would also be prepared to make a 'prototype' for finding out what goes wrong etc and practiing on before making the finished article - trust me, you will need to F$$k about with it a lot and spoil it and learn from your mistakes. Next one I make i'll photograph the process.

I was planning on using Walnut, hickery and/or ash. It definitely seems like I will need to mess around with how long I need to steam the differnent kinds wood. I want to make a steambox out of pvc.
Pictures would help a lot!

My "steambox" was a length of PVC pipe with a couple of nails through to sit the strips on so each one get steamed all round, with a rag poked in one end and my steamer in the other - make sure you have a hole for the steam to come back ou!!!!! Also, PVC pipe is probably not the bast material, since it wilts like a floppy d1ck when heated!!

Personally, i wouldnt spend a great deal of time making a steaming box, and literally cobble one up using a length of pipe as i described - if your a perfectionist like me, youll spend more than enough time perfecting the net than having to bother with a perfect steam box aswell, steaming the wood is the easy bit !

Graeme what did you use to cut the strips? table saw? I will have to see if I can use someones or go to homedepot and see if they will cut them for me.

I am making a frame from sections and glueing the sections together. I will post a pic if it turns out alright

Obviously a table saw would be best, but I wasnt going to invest in one just to make a net, so I used my circular saw very carefully instead, its a bit rougher, but you need to plane down the strips anyway to get them totally flat so there are no gaps between the laminations.
