Default What to use instead of lures?

I'm starting to think about what to tie for next year, I don't do winter fishing - winter is for fly tying and gaming. I don't enjoy fishing lures not because I feel they are cheating or the fact that their not a size 16 Grey Duster tied with all the correct materials as some of us would be using.

I fish for rainbows in small stillwaters 99.9% of the time. I was thinking on wet flies but was wondering if anyone has used them on smallwaters instead of lures before?

Thanks
AL

I've used traditional wets on still waters and IMHO, they can be as effective as any other fly. Invicta, Silver Butcher, Black Pennel and Kate Mclaren being my favourites.

Oh, and don't forget my favourite fly this past few months, the Dabbler

Happy Tying..

So, are you going to tell us why.

Not as productive as the big lures or blobs, but they take fish

Black Pennel is my fav

Sorry, I find fishing lures just a bit too repetitive, also I prefer fishing with my 6wt rod and this means I have to change tackle to my 7/8 to fish some of the heavier leaded lures.

Try some spider patterns.
Black with a silver wire rib on size 14, 16 & 18 hooks. B170's and B175's
Olive Peasant tail body with a copper rib. Can work very well when there is a hatch of those small green buzzers.
Natural PT with a copper rib and Greenwell hen hackle. Good in a midge hatch.
On B170's they hang high in the water. B175's go a bit deeper but niether sink a quickly as the more often used superglue type buzzers.
The spiders stay nearer the surface, which is what you want if the fisaha are "Up".

If you don't like using lures then don't use them A 6WT is not an excuse lol

Fish what you enjoy using and you will catch if you have confidence in a fly. I remember only a few weeks ago, i was catching on a dry fly while others were catching on diawl bach, buzzers (floating line) & lures (mixed lines).

Twice world fly-fishing champion Brian Leadbetter once said "If they banned the soldier palmer, I'd stop fishing." nuf said.
Brian dresssed his pattern with a silver rib.

I don't like fishing lures particularly either, the nearest I fish is a size 10 max. black or olive tadpole with bead head - more of a nymph really and castable on a 6 weight . Of wet flies ,I have caught loads of fish on Mallard & Claret and Black Pennel , I retrieve quite slowly 99% of the time , I would be happy fishing any of the traditionals anywhere .
