Default Is it ok

To use a coarse landing net instead of a trout landing net for now?

As long as it's knotless and small mesh no problem.

Of course, a net is a net after all.

I regularly use a large 'coarse fishing' net, especially when boat fishing. So called trout nets, of the collapsible variety, only really come into their own if you've got some walking to do ... and are happy in the knowledge that it will catch in any bankside vegetation that it can or contrive to tangle every time you try to use it.

Nets, sadly, are a necessary abomination.

Absolutely!

However, if you release your fish then try, as much as possible, to use a knotless mesh.

Even better, the Greys rubberised nets are superb as they are gentle on fish and dont stink the car out when wet!

All nets have to be knottless (both for coarse and for trout), so no problem. Rubberised mesh even better as it doesn't take as much of the fish's protective slime of it. It also dries quicker and has less stink.

I always use a Middy SUPER SOFT "match-carp-spoon." It has a soft polyester net and a soft mesh base that retains water and is designed to be kinder to the fish. It's far superior to any trout net I've ever come across for the welfare of the fish.

Thanks for the answers. I will check my landing net it's pretty new so should be knotless. I do have a river landing net so it will only be for stillwaters.

Coarse fishing nets have been fish friendly for many years, longer than trout nets, because they have always been for catch and release, so no problems on that front at all

A coarse fishing net with a one-piece, 1.5 to 2 meter handle is almost mandatory for bank fishing at Farmoor, I find !

It's actually better so to do, especially if your net is long handled and has a nice fish friendly knotless pan net for catch and release. Avoid the tennis rackets and the big meshed nets at all costs if you want to return your fish in good condition.
