This coming year i have decided to take on a few rivers for the brownies, salmon and sea trout....this is a new part of the game for me as ive only ever fished land locked waters and ive heard the term favourable conditions on more than a few occasions! could someone please explain what those conditions are.

Personally I would say favourable conditions are when the river is not down to its bare bones or in flood, it's overcast and not blazing sunshine, slight breeze and not blowing a hooley, you remembered your flask and sandwiches.

Salmon and Seatrout.A rise in water brings in fresh fish/fish from lower down the river.these fish for a short time become taking fish.but from experience,when fish are a in the river,then good cloud cover with a rippled surface to the river/loch will be good for a taking fish.

Salmon and Seatrout - when the river is 'fining' down after a spate - if the water is clear enough to be able to see your fly six inches under the surface then you're good to go.

All of the above is good advise. Yet I would say, go fishing when you want and see what mother nature has thrown up for you.
Keep a diary of weather and river conditions along with any sightings or captures of fish. This will then help you to learn the "best " times to go in future.

Favourable conditions on the rivers and streams I fish mean a day or so after some rain when the levels are dropping but running reasonably clear. If I turn up and it still looks like milky tea or hot chocolate then I don't bother. When it's 'on it's bones' and hasn't rained for ages it is harder, especially if the sun is high in the sky but those fish you do catch count extra. Also time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted! In the Spring until the Autumn the evenings are easier than the days.

Finally, when you are walking back to the car after a blank, conditions were obviously unfavourable.
