Default fishing in Holland?

Hi folks,

going to Holland for a few days to visit the inlaws, and am being taken fishing by my father-in-law. My guess is that it will be coarse fish, but I recently taught him to fly fish, and he's mad keen to use the fly gear.

Does anyone have any experience with fly fishing for coarse fish in the Netherlands, and have any suggestions for tactics/flies? The area we're going to is called de Biesbosch, if that helps.

Thanks!

Hi Matt b, If you get a chance, try Oostervornse Meer in the Netherlands. You'll need chesties and a good sun screen. Saltwater Rainbows that will test you to the limit.

I fished this around 11 years ago and it is fantastic. There are little breakwater walls you can walk along but have gaps in between and some places take you to the wader tops. This isn't easy fishing and in some cases you'll see some very large fish, that will just frustrate the hell out of you.

We were fishing small lures and shrimp patterns and I caught two on the second trip we made from Germany. I was using a slow sinking line and a Black rabbit lure. The fish feed primarily on shrimps from their landlocked briny environment, but are truly strong.

Just when you think you have them nailed, they'll take you back out for another run. Frustrating, Heart stopping, and sometimes very cold. If you didn't swear before going here, you may afterward??

Take a floater, a good intermediate mid glass type and a DI3. Also a wading staff. It can get really windy so the usual breathables will be a good idea. Some of the locals use dries which work in the warmer months.

Click the link for the map and see where this is, Ok

Best regards

Stuart

Matt, at this time of year I would imagine that it would be fishing for pike.

Check out the following link for Dutch fishing permits etc.
Vispas - English - Sportvisserij Nederland

Hope you have a great trip.
