Default UK duty on a US import?

Can anyone tell me what the duty rate would be on a fly rod imported from the States? (Assuming I get asked to pay )

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Fishing tackle is usually 3.7% plus you will also be liable for vat at 20%

Forgot to mention, the duty is calculated on the value so if the rod is a low value there may be no duty just vat

Many thanks for the info.

Given that the U$D value usually equals the GBP value then even with paying duty and VAT we'd be quids in!

Splendid!

For a very quick calculation.just add 30% to the total including P+P.And you'll be pretty close

Thanks guys for all your replies.

Just to take it a step further - anyone know if US tackle shops can discount or is it true that they're tied into contracts with the major manufacturers that won't let them sell below RRP?

I don't see why they can't discount but you need to ask yourself do they need to for a single sale? They would realise you are having a good deal as it stands. Some companies offer to put a reduced value invoice in with the order to reduce the tax. Not legal but does happen. Some put a not in stating it's a gift.

I very recently imported a Sage rod from the states Mark, it was sent via USPS, and sailed through.
Not even a charge from Royal Mail, couldn't believe it.
Just lucky I suppose, next time I could be hammered.

That's a fair point but I do believe when I am spending 6 or 7 hundred dollars I'd be pretty stupid not to ask the question.
