Default Some newbie Questions on setting up a fly rod

I just want to get this right and trying to find any info is a nightmare.

1 what knot should I tie when connecting the tippet line to a hooped fly line ??

2 Is the blood knot a good knot to attach your fly to the tippet line??

Try this one...

Perfection Loop | How to tie the Perfection Loop | Fishing Knots

2 Is the blood knot a good knot to attach your fly to the tippet line??
And this one... Though a blood knot is probably just as good.

Improved Clinch Knot | How to tie the Improved Clinch Knot | Fishing Knots

Most importantly wet the knot with saliva before tightening, pull tight slowly and always test.

Cheers

Andy

And heres a link to another simple loop.
How to tie the Figure-of-8 loop knot
and if you go past the loop part you'll get a good reliable dropper knot.

Here's some useful set up knots

Fly Fishing Knots

I always used to use the half blood knot with mono - excellent knot. However, I had problems with it when using fluoro and started using "The Knot" as posted by Noeyedeer in this thread - a davy knot with an extra tuck.

Davy knot

I think that other people have had problems with using the half blood with fluoro. One tackle shop advised using only two turns with the half blood when using fluoro.

Fly Line to leader connection:

A. If the fly line has a loop on the end, tie a loop to the butt (thick) end of the leader with a perfection loop or surgeons loop knot. Then do a loop to loop connection to the fly line.

B. If there is no loop on the end of the fly line, tie the butt end of the leader to the fly line with a nail knot or nailess nail knot and then cover the knot with Pliobond cement to smooth the connection. After that leader is trashed, leave the nail knot and butt end of the leader connected to the fly line. Cut the butt back to about 10" and tie a perfection loop or surgeons loop to the end. Then do a loop to loop connection to the new leader.

Knots for connection sections of leader or tippet, eg mono to mono knots - Use a blood knot or a surgeon's knot.

Knot for tippet to fly - Improved clinch, Davy knot, or Orvis knot.

My personal preferences are nail knot, blood knot, perfection loop, and Orvis knot.

Thumbs up Re: Some newbie Questions on setting up a fly rod

3lb Grayling

Thanks for sharing the link to the figure of 8 loop knot. I use the Davy Knot for fly to tippet and it is brilliant, never fails if tied correctly. The water knot for line connections, droppers etc., never really liked it. Now I am a very happy bunny Magic..........
