Default Jacket Colour

Hi everyone,

I just wondered what peoples thoughts were on clothing colour when fishing rivers? The reason that I ask is that I wear sand coloured breathable waders but with a royal blue jacket and I'm wondering if this could be scaring fish away?

It is very possible though that my catch rates on rivers are low because I'm just a rubbish fisherman

I'm wondering whether to invest in a 'proper' wading jacket in an olive/dark colour to see if it makes any difference.

Your thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers, Rob.

More important to keep off the skyline.................put a shadow on a fish and that's the last you will see of it and any others around. Having said that I prefer drab. I generaly have a tree/bush/greeny backdrop behind me on the waters that I fish so try to blend in with that................you never know who's watching...................birdsnest

Clothing colours are very important and worth the effort to get right...

Dry Fly 'Expert': Middling...

But no matter what you wear you will still need to conceal yourself from the fish...

Buy yourself some drab clothing by all means. Personally I have some ex army camo goretex. of ebay and its excellent. You dont need expensive wading jackets they wont help you catch fish.

I would concentrate on the basics as RWs posts , Personally I would say keep of the skyline dont wade unless you have to and generally practise care and concealment. and if you use a wading staff get a rubber end on it. Fish do sense vibration....

Most angling books concentrate on tackle and technique and skim over this basic element , watercraft as its often referred to. If you can get hold of a copy read Vincent Marinaro " In the ring of the rise" Its hard going at times but there is some interesting stuff in there about how and what fish see..

I always wear drab colours, olive green most of the time, but a mate wears a bright red jacket and it doesn't seem to affect his catch rate. I think movement, especially against the sky line, is probably what scares fish most.

Got a Cammo jacket I don once in a while and the last time I wore it I went to a pub after fishing and they hustled me through to have my drink in the public bar! Not concerned about having a drink in the public bar just the attitude of certain landlords.

I don't river fish but it's the same with stillwater,id go along with keeping off and not moving against the skyline.Take Bob Nudd for example,he sits their all day long in a bright red top and white cap and catches hundreds of fish

The other thing to maybe consider is if you have studs in your boots? They can fairly crunch along the bottom, like the wading staff mentioned above.

Of course the worse thing for spooking fish is noise and vibration, something they're particularly sensitive to, and they can both travel some distance in water.
