Well, I can tell you what Hanningfield say to me when I ask - So that they can have a break!

They are open 7 days a week, for nearly 12hrs a day for much of the year and reckon they need they downtime.

Personally, I wish they weren't as I dont go crazy for Bank Fishing as much as I do messing about in boats

Many years ago was told it was to do maintenance work on the res. That may be true, but as Ben says they probably just need a break after ten months on the go.

A number of reasons:

(1)Cost:- Running cost reservoir if their open for anglers need staffing, trout need to be purchased, rod numbers are usually not high enough to warrant the extra staffing / stocking costs

(2) Weather:- winter weather, ice, snow & winter gales again can have a dramatic effect on rod number.

(3) Opportunity for maintenance, boats, motors, pontoons etc

(4) Some of the major midland waters have nature reserves on them, important overwintering areas for wildfowl, some also have SSI orders on them or areas of them, they may therefore have their seasons, opening – closing dates for boats & bank fishing periods & numbers of fish stocked agreed with Natural England (English Nature before it became N.E) each season.
