Default Loch Leven

Well i decided to take the dog for a walk the day up around part of Loch Leven, as i crossed a bridge at Burleigh sands i was confronted with white bellies sticking up from the mud , i stopped and looked and i counted 6 dead brown trout, and noticed 1 that was barely alive , half its back sticking out the water and its mouth , head and fins were white like a fungus.
i tried taking a picture with my phone but that was useless.
I carried on walking to the shore of the Loch and noticed my dog rolling in a trout.
I went to get her only to find a further 9 trout and the stink was so bad i was dry heaving and it takes a lot to make me heave.

I stopped to talk to a few people i knew and they told me they had seen a few more further round out on the sand.
I came home contacted the SNH but no one answered so i left a voice msg.
I then contacted SEPA who were very polite and interested, the woman i spoke asked for my details and said someone will be in touch and 15 - 20 mins later i got a phone call from someone higher up in SEPA.
And it sounds like they will get someone to go out to the Loch tomorrow to have a look around and check the water and will get back to me to let me know what is happening.
and that they will talk to the SNH to see if they were aware of this problem.
At no point on my walk did i see any notices or signs up warning me of blue green algae or pollution in the water, as it is at a part of the Loch where dogs often go for a swim / paddle.

Sounds like spent fish which did not recover from the rigours of spawning. Probably not that unusual, however, confirmation from SEPA would be good.

I just had SEPA on the phone to me keeping me up to date and he told me the guys at the Loch are aware of it and are concerned as to why fish have been showing up dead recently and they are looking into it as well.
But SEPA are going to get involved as well to see if they can get answers.

So hopefully Michael and his dad Willie along with SEPA can get an answer.

Come on you can't have your cake and eat it.this is what your salmon farm sponsor does to the rivers.just hope its not a serious problem for leven as it seems to have been getting back on its feet of late.

Good on you for contacting the correct bodies James; just a shame to hear about this after a great recovery over the years. Hopefully as said above, it's only spent fish.

What are you on?
this is what salmon farms do to rivers?
never heard of a sea cage polluting a river.
but maybe you want to prove me wrong?!
stop taking cheap shots at the youth team who have no say as to who will, or wont, sponsor their efforts.
regards

Nice one James. Better to ring the bell than just look at the fish and wonder, like a good few many will have done no doubt. Lets hope its spent fish.

Haha, everythin this guy posts relates back to salmon farming but the troth of the matte is that if he cared so much, he'd make an attempt to join sana or go to their meetings not ridicule people who want to fish for their country - It's like saying that the world isn't allowed to play football anymore because i dont like sports directsponsoring newcastle or Unicef sponsoring BArcelona etc.
