Question Another "Small hand in the air" question vis a vis your fishing Seasons.

99.9999% of our fishing is done on 'you buy your license and you're good to go.' So on a given bit of still water/river you can fish for this or that, but not that, etc., and etc.

Yes, it's a damned good idea to read the 80-100 pages of Oregon's fishing regulations. And call the "800" number to see if things have changed ... and they do on occasion.

But your 'seasons' confuse me as much of where you fish appear to be 'private' still waters (the seasons on rivers I can see). If the lake/what-ever is "private property" does it have 'we're closed to fishing?'

A few, very very few, (private waters) here in Oar-E-Gone and you could fish 12 months of the year if you were stocking the water. Public water as in my home river (Rogue) is open for fishing 365, just a question of what you could legally target.

But back to the basic question, how do your 'seasons' work and does it cover Public as well as Privately owned water(s)?

Very, very, complicated Fred, and made more complicated by different regulations in different countries. In Scotland the brown trout season.River and stillwater is 15th march-6th october some places close earlier, but otherwise that the National law. There is no close season for rainbow trout(alien species)The Salmon season is run from river system to river system but in general will close 31st Oct (most rivers) or 30th Nov, but opening dates are wildly different. No sunday fishing for Salmon or seatrout. I'll leave it up to an English and Irish Angler to tell you their rules/dates.

Forgot to mention.there is no Rod or national licence in Scotland. but you have to buy a ''permit'' to fish even on public waters for Game fish. There are some rules regarding wild brown trout which can allow you free fishing.but you are supposed to have permission to fish.
No doubt, someone will come along shortly and tell you the in's and out's of the ''Free'' fishing rules.

Fred am I wrong or right in thinking that back in the 1960s or 70s that the department of game and fish did research on whether a closed season did any benefit to fish and if I remember correctly the findings were that it didn,t make a hell of a lot of difference either way and I believe that is why fishing now is allowed 365 days a year over there? Of course here in the uk everything is "tradition" so whether a closed season benefits the fish or not is totally irrelevant!

Not sure what you're getting at here Fred - surely 'England' should mean just that? ie. England.

The land area of Scotland is 78,772 km2 (30,414 sq mi), roughly 30% of the area of the United Kingdom (UK). But what this has with our various salmon and trout seasons I really don't know.

Fred, the open season for brown trout, sea trout and salmon varies wildly wherever you happen to be in England and Wales and the dates are governed by Environment Agency Byelaws and the open season for each river and whether trout, salmon or sea trout. Here's a link that'll give you the idea ...

Environment Agency - Rod Fishing Byelaws

Not to worry, I just Googled the word "England" and that's what I got. Zero clue if that covered Scotland, et al. Although suspected not.

Base question (which the link just posted will kill an hour or so) is/was from State to State you'd better do a hell of a lot of reading before you walk up to 'water.'

For context, you can have 'I one it water (eg: you own the lake) or it can be State owned water. Then it becomes a question of who put in the fish? You bought, you set the rule(s); State supplied the fish, their 'rules' apply.

My underlying question was how does that configure 'over there?' No clue, but curious.
