Default frayed end to floating line?

Hi folks,

doing some end of season cleaning and tidying.

I have several floating lines where the very tips - front few cm or so - have gotten completely knackered, and water seeps up into the line, turning them into sink tips.

Could people suggest a solution?

Thanks.

Cut the defective few centimeters off and seal the end of the line with superglue to stop water penetration. This should do the trick.

Par for the course I'm afraid! Cut the end off - form a wee loop in the end of the line and whip over it with some tying thread , wee spot of glue on that, and Bobs your uncle. or shrink wrap welded loop!

Cut the offending bit off each line and make a sacrificial butt. Just fasten a couple of yards of 20 or 22lbs BS monofilament to the newly made end of the line using the needle knot. You won't need any glue as the coils of the knot will crimp the end of the line tight enough to prevent the ingress of water.

Then build your leaders onto the sacrificial butts using four turn water knots.

Thanks very much folks - appreciated.

I had tried superglue in the past, but think I overdid it: ended up with a very rigid little blob, and then the line almost immediately started cracking at the join.

It is best to avoid glue on fly lines as the coating will nearly always react with the solvent/dispersant in the glue. That needle knot will seal your line nicely.

Strip a couple of centimetres of line off the core first, Mostyn, (dip in nail varnish remover to soften), double this over to form your loop, then whip over with tying thread. Coat with Sally, or Bugbond.. if you have it.

Miles slimmer and softer than the welded loops. You won't even notice this going through the rings. Attach leader direct, or loop-to-loop a braid, furled leader etc.

Great - several approaches to experiment with this evening. Thank you.

Looking forward to the nail polish remover fumes in the confines of my little shed...

+1 with Richard here. The trim back idea/etc., is well covered but you want to seal the line with something like AcqaSeal, Shoe Goo, Silicon based bathtub caulking, etc. All stuff that's water proof and stays flexible at any temperature.

Or sell your sink-tips and use these instead
