10'-8# should cover most single handed situations.

Terry,
I use a 9ft6 6/7 weight with an 8 weight line. It's very powerful for a 6/7 though. The heavier line helps when casting my size 6 weighted doubles.

I would use 9-10ft 7 or 8 weight and a short extension wouldn't go amiss. The shorter rods are a real benefit in overgrown tree lined rivers

I use a Greys Platinum XD 10ft for an 8wt. It turns everything over just dandy from singles to wee copper tubes. I use DT lines with it.

You should be ok.It is better to have a mid-tip action rather than an all out tip actioned rod.IMHO
And putting a 8# on a 7# rod should help with this.

Hi Terri,
Though I dont 100% agree to Salmon fishing with a single handed rod in these days of catch and release when there are some brilliant 12/13ft double handers out there and with scandinavian type spey casting techniecs it would not matter if you had a 20ft cliff behind you.
But if you have to use one for any reason #8 loaded with a Rio iline is brilliant I use one for seatrout, but I would not like to have a 18/20 pounder on the other end a fish of a lifetime and be in tears when I could not revive it.
Sorry to be a miserable gitt its my age.

All the best with your choice,

Anglingbri

Why not?

It is much easier and faster to play a fish on a single handed short rod than on a long double handed rod. The long rods advantages are for casting and line control - not playing fish hard. I simply hold the rod a few inches above the butt when playing a fish. They use single handers for Kings and even Marlin fishing - always short rods - and for good reason.
