Default The NewZealand Method

At the risk of being chastised, what is it?

Thanks

Do not worry about being chastised.
It is a method where a generally smaller nymph or spider is suspended under a larger dry fly.
A short length of nylon is tied to the bend of the dry and the nymph to the end of that. The dry is attached in the usual way.

maharg has it spot on, the "standard" NZ rig is a dry/nymph combo with the nylon tied off the bend of the dry. It is often used with 2 nymphs as well. The main difference from most other styles is the lack of droppers, all flies are in-line and tied directly of the bend of the preceeding fly.
All the best.

I'm assuming I leave the barb of te dry on?

Would I get takes on the dry here?

You will get takes on the dry as well.
There is some debate as to the hooking qualites of the method to the dry. Some say that the trailing nylon to the nymph put fish off and even obscure the take.
If you are getting most of your takes to the dry take the nymph off.

Earlier in the year I was using this method on my local wee river. I could not get one fish to take the nymph????
Then using the exact same rig on the Clyde I was getting 80% on the nymph.
I had a wee think and I came to the conclusion that the wee stream is heavily wooded and over hung.It is generally not that fertile with aquatic nymphs either. The fish were more used to seeing terrestrial flies on the surface than subsurface and were more inclined to be looking up.

Rather than tying the bottom nymph off the bend of the dry fly you can also tie a length of tippet with the nymph on above the dry fly, with a half blood, then slide it down til it butts up against the dry fly and hangs below it. Or tie the top dry on a dropper. Strictly speaking this might not be "New Zealand" style as I believe that does imply tying off the hook bend, but a more general name for this style of fishing whatever variation is used would be the duo. A small bead head nymph below a bushy sedge pattern is a classic example.

Yes - both flies will catch fish - in fact I once had a double hook up, a fish took the nymph whilst I was playing a fish which had taken the dry! Lost the "bottom" fish predictably as it broke me as soon as they pulled in opposite directions.

I fish this method using barbless/de-barbed hooks and don't have slip off's,and yes you also get takes on the dry
