Default Buying a reel from the states/ duty??

One of the US eBay sellers has a few lamsons in at the moment for what seem to be decent money and shipping costs.

How likely am I to get stung for duty, and if so what are the costs?

Cheers!

Very likely, and add 30% just in case.

I think the cut off is somewhere around £150 from memory, above that and agree with mrtrout for certain as duty is payable, below that and VAT is all you have to pay. I bought a new Echo rod and imported in for about £130 plus postage and paid £25 VAT but no import duty, so £175 all in and happy days for sure...

I can speak to merchandise going the opposite direction.

I have ordered and had items abroad which were shipped via United Parcel Service and they collect the duty. I suspect that FedEx would do the same.

However, items sent via the postal service arrive without duty. In the USA, the US postal service does not go to the trouble of collecting duty for the US customs service for minor purchases. So I always ask that items are sent via mail.

Phil, why would you pay VAT on a repair?, haven't you already paid VAT when you bought it in the first place.
If it goes faulty and you return it for repair, it shouldn't attract VAT twice.
I know what you're saying, but TBH the tax shouldn't apply twice.

£17.50 is the cutoff point.

Handy that Neil thanks, looks like I am stuck with another £42 on my Sage rod, but no duty, when it arrives.
