Default Another Wader Question

Sorry but I need the advice

I am about to buy my first pair of chest waders (or rather Santa is)and it looks an absolute minefield. There is no way I am going to pay £600 for anything like the Simms but perhaps £300 for something like the Hardy EWS or am I wasting money, would the Greys GRXi, Airflow or Scierra to name but a few represent better value. I am sure that you probably get what you pay for but where does the law of diminishing returns kick in? I will probably wear them about 20 to 30 times a year. I think I would like the breathable material as well.

Now assuming I buy a pair with latex feet can you get something to wear between the latex stocking feet and the boots or do you just wear a thick pair of socks inside and outside.

Thanks

Hi petehb,
Try the search function on the forum, its along the top under your username. There are pages and pages on here about which waders, look back through the tackle talk pages too, loads of it

Hi Pete,
I have recently bought my first pair of breathable chesties. After viewing all the opinions on here I have opted to try the Bison brand. They were about £75 and have a neoprene stocking foot.
They look good value, but I have not tried them yet.

I intend to buy some boots to wear with them, will probably opt for hiking boots of some kind as they are a lot cheaper than 'dedicated' wading boots.

Hope to try them soon.

Dave

I too have Bisons, had them out half a dozen or so times and no probs so far, they fit me well. Dave, i got bison wading boots as part of the deal £100 for waders an boots, dont know how much the boots are alone but the are ecxellent (imho) i got the felt soled ones as my fishing is all done in the one river at present. Im a size 9 so ordered a 10 and they fit perfectly. I do a fair bit of walking in them and have no complaints at all.

Hi Peter, if you are prepared to pay up to £300 then I would take a look at the Orvis Silver Label ones, £249 or less at the moment.
The Orvis back up is second to none if and when they leak, and they will.
As for something to protect your neoprene booties, I wear another pair of neoprene socks, which you can find quite cheaply on ebay.
They stop any sand or gravel getting to the bootie, I know the gravel guards should do this, but they usually don't, and it's much safer in the long run to invest in a pair.

I have been using Orvis Silver Label for the last 2 years. I don't want tempt fate by recommending them as they will probably leak next time out.
Boots, Simms G4 with studs and Cleats, best boots I have ever had.

As above-Orvis everytime. It's all to do with the guarantee you see.

Thanks for that I had thought about Orvis but didn't put them in the list, looks like they may fit the bill as well as my waist line

I’m going to fly in the face of popular opinion here; Orvis have a very good returns policy, but they need it.

Let me qualify that, I bought some Orivs waders some time ago based on great reports and their warranty, and had to return 3 pairs to the shop within a 6 week period because they all leaked, I actually sat in the bath with the last pair to test them because I was getting fed up of being wet after fishing (they leaked).

Yes they were replaced without any questions but I would rather a company do it’s own quality control than have to try pair after pair on a trial and error basis. I swapped for Greys in the end and they are doing fine after 2 years (not too heavy use though).

If you live close to a tackle shop, and are prepared to try a few pairs then Orvis might be great for you. I know lots of people who swear by them and only a few who swear at them!
