Default New to river fishing next year I hope

Hi All ,

I wish to explore some river trout next season and except for a little shot years ago with my normal loch rod I have little experience.

To start me off I have already aquired a 7' odyssey rod and a 8'6" travel odyssey,I was gifted a nice 4# line from paulb is this enough or should I be looking at a longer 4# rod or maybe 5# I guess my target rivers will be Carron Falkirk and Avon Linlithgow but maybe a trip to clyde too any help appreciated.

Pete

Hi Pete and Terry. I,m a river virgin, too so will look forward to any posts you send in as a help-if I can find someone to take me out-things are looking promising, but nothing definite yet.

Your 8'6 should serve you well down the gorge but you're gonna need something a little longer, and perhaps stronger for up the Clyde. If you've never fished up there the wind on a decent day will drive you to distraction. Then again it all depends on how you're going to fish too.

Hi Pete,

Your an experienced fly angler; and river fishing will pose no problem to you! After-all it ain't rocket science. Just remember the fish in running water are feeding against the flow; and moving from side to side. also look and fish close to the bankside! On slack water? it's just like lake water, fish are bottom feeding, or looking up from their hiding place amongst stones or weed beds. I always fish up stream in varied positions of presentation, look for those gold and silver flashes in the water, always a good sign of feeding fish. Stealth is very important, on a river system the fish cannot hear you speak shout or jump up and down while your on the bankside, but the moment you step in the water, your creating a noise in their environment; and they can detect the vibration from every step you take. keep as low as possible on the bankside and when wading! River fly fishing is an active and exercising pass-time you must keep moving up stream, slowly and quietly.

Rods? The 8ft.6in #4, weight Rod is probably the best all round river rod; and will do the job on any river large or small! Although you may like to try a 9ft, #4 or even a #5 for those large rivers, Well, that depends on you! I use a 9ft#3,weight on the Wye and Usk Rivers (both Large Rivers) and my heaviest line is a #4,weight! For streams a 7ft. #2/3 is a good allround rod.

Above all enjoy it, once you've mastered the tschniques; your going to fall in love with river fly fishing.

Regards

M

Sorry M but thats bolox that fish cant feel you jump up and down , they're lateral line is designed to detect things like that vibration etc ,any fish you sneak up on on the bankside jump up and down and they will scarper like a bolted rabbit .......
