Hi Pete,
Your an experienced fly angler; and river fishing will pose no problem to you! After-all it ain't rocket science. Just remember the fish in running water are feeding against the flow; and moving from side to side. also look and fish close to the bankside! On slack water? it's just like lake water, fish are bottom feeding, or looking up from their hiding place amongst stones or weed beds. I always fish up stream in varied positions of presentation, look for those gold and silver flashes in the water, always a good sign of feeding fish. Stealth is very important, on a river system the fish cannot hear you speak shout or jump up and down while your on the bankside, but the moment you step in the water, your creating a noise in their environment; and they can detect the vibration from every step you take. keep as low as possible on the bankside and when wading! River fly fishing is an active and exercising pass-time you must keep moving up stream, slowly and quietly.
Rods? The 8ft.6in #4, weight Rod is probably the best all round river rod; and will do the job on any river large or small! Although you may like to try a 9ft, #4 or even a #5 for those large rivers, Well, that depends on you! I use a 9ft#3,weight on the Wye and Usk Rivers (both Large Rivers) and my heaviest line is a #4,weight! For streams a 7ft. #2/3 is a good allround rod.
Above all enjoy it, once you've mastered the tschniques; your going to fall in love with river fly fishing.
Regards
M
