Default UK's Top Trout Fishing Town

North America's Top 10 Trout-Fishing Towns - Forbes.com

I stumbled across this old article entitled "North America's Top 10 Trout Fishing Towns" and it got me wondering if any town or village in the UK could call itself a "trout town" or "trout village", the kind of place where locals and visitors alike eat, sleep and breathe fly fishing.

I guess you would need quality trout fishing (preferably having featured in the writings of esteemed fishing authors), a dedicated fly fishing store and a pub/inn (preferably fishing themed with a stuffed fish or two above the bar) where the landlord wouldn't bat an eye if you stumbled in wearing your fishing vest or breathable waders.

Are there any that match this description?

Stockbridge in Hampshire would get my vote.

River Test country, has two fly fishing stores and a pub next to the Test called The Mayfly. There are also incredibly large trout in the small canal which flows down the High Street.

Northampton has had the reputation of being England's top fishing town for years, with Ravensthorpe, Pitsford, Eyebrook, Draycote, Grafham and Rutland all within easy reach, in addition to all the coarse fishing. No wonder it's bred so many good anglers - Bob Church to name but one.

Another vote for Stockbridge from me too. Orvis shop, Mayfly pub, river test, Dever springs down the road (and sutton springs too, LOL)

And those fish in the stream are awesome.

Another vote for Bakewell, the hub of the dry fly universe. Where it all started and where you can still enjoy Sport on a day ticket, club membership, or syndicate to match those experienced by the great Victorian writers and with wild fish instead of farmed stockies. Maybe not all the population lives and breathes fishing but Bakewell has a population that in the main loves its river and everything to do with it. The response from the Townsfolk to the threats posed to the river and its inhabitants by a planned Hydro was very encouraging and played no small part in the decision to say no to the scheme.

Stockbridge vote here too, two great fly fishing stores, the Test runs through it, feeding the trout in the high street is an institution, a great trout smokery, home of the Houghton Club, fly fishing instructor living in the high street, very successful fly fishing letting company based near it, that'll do!
