Smile Newbie here

Hi, newcomer to both this forum and to trout fishing here.

Been coarse fishing for the best part of 40 years and despite a "dabble" into the carp scene, ive always just enjoyed fishing for anything using a float road and my old trusted mitchell match reel.

But ive always had this desire to go flyfishing for trout and next year, im going for it. Ive always tied flies...purely because i enjoy it as an art and other people actually catch things on my flies that ive tied in the past.

So ive had a look on your forum and now's the time to start asking questions. Im lucky enough to live in an area which is pretty good with resevoirs and fisheries but the thought of fishing a huge expanse of water with some dayglo lure fills me with dread and seems much like mackerel fishing off Brighton marina !!!

But i appreciate i have to start somewhere and living in Lewes, East Sussex, i have Barcome, Ardingly and Arlington resevoirs within a stone's throw. my Coarse club also has a small stretch of the river Uck.

So i have bought some second hand fly tying stuff from ebay which should arrive this week and i now need a rod n reel and to learn how to cast.

So please be gentle with me....i really know nothing about flyfishing and hopefully with a lot of help from you lot, i can spend the winter learning about it.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy and welcome.

Not being from your area I don't know what is your most local / best trout fishing club.
Someone on here will advise you on that aspect.
But join a club, go to the winter program and fly tying evenings. Make friends at the club and take casting instruction if they have that facility.
Only buy a rod that you have tried out and which is suitable for the type of venue you will fish most frequently.
You will need a different rod for a ressie or stream.

Yes this forum is a good place but it can't beat real hands on tuition from someone standing next to you.

Hope that helps a bit.

"+1" here with FT07. Even though 95% of my fishing is in rivers, much of what I've learned here is directly transferable to 8 times zones to the west.
