Default What Fishing Magazine?

Following on from North Country Angler's comments about the T&S pic's what magazine/regular publication does one subscribe to? Am mindful of the fact that this subject does come up fairly regularly.

There is a place for a magazine in the house and my subscription to FT&FF is just about to expire and I am getting a bit peed off with their insistence on using drawings a lot of the time over real photos of flies.

Am thinking of subscribing to one from overseas like The Drake or Hatches or something. Quite like Total Flyfisher but am not sure about how much river stuff is on there although I do fish large stillwaters as well from time to time.

Yep appreciate that time delay and postage costs for an overseas subscription are negative factors. But I like a magazine to flick through in the small room.

I had a close look at November's T&S when it arrived, picture quality is (as others have said) disappointing. Total FlyFisher was my magazine of choice when I started in 2008, learning to flyfish on small stillwaters. At the moment, I'm wanting to fish moving water more than still, but would probably always continue to do some fishing on still. It is a good point you make - my perception of Total Flyfisher is the same as yours.

I don't think I'll continue with my T&S subscription but apart from TFF I've not really read other fly fishing mags, so don't really know what else is out there that might suit me at this stage in my development onto moving water.

I would say, the Trout fisherman mag offers the best value for money.

Are you sure its a fishing magazine you are looking for Loopy

I found that there are no definitive magazine that suits my tastes but T&S is probably the closest even though the quality has gone if I could alter it there would probably be no salmon fishing or all the fishing reports at the back.

When I first returned to fly fishing in 2007 I bought all four. I found that FF&Ft have gone all hoity-toity and they along with TF are the only mag I never won a competition from. Okay that isn,t a big deal to go on, but I,ve won comps on both TFF and T&S crosswords yet I bought those magazines for as long as I bought FF&FT and TF don,t have as many comps as the others. Then in April my local newsagent closed down so I decided to cut down and only take T&S as my wife got me a TFF subscription in 2008 and renews it every year and I find that though it,s the cheapest it,s the best value as TF is very much like FF&FT and for some reason FF&FT have lost something I can,t quite put my finger on. To be honest I only kept buying T&S in hopes of winning their monthly crossword comp which I have been very lucky to do in the past-not for 18 months now though, but I find this the most expensive of the four is becoming disappointing so will not be buying any more. Of course this is just my opinion.

You may consider 'investing' the cover price in your local turf accountants if winning something is your main criteria

LOL

In all seriousness I think that Richard is probably right although it's a quarterly if I remember.

Thanks for the views and the comments.

that will be a quick read then, my lad brought me a copy out in Sept and considering I never get the chance to read any fishing mag 1 year to the next I was bitterly disappointed,as quoted above and a bit too old school for my taste .
I probably get a better read on this forum.

Bob
