Default Did anyone else get this today from the EA?

Dear Angler

I am writing on behalf of the Environment Agency about an email we sent you earlier today. This was an email was sent to salmon and migratory trout rod licence holders informing them of a new and easy way to complete their annual rod catch return online.

Unfortunately your email address was inserted into the ‘To’ field by accident instead of the ‘Bcc’ or blind copy field. Please accept my sincere apologies for this error. The Environment Agency treats the security of your personal data very seriously and I will take steps to ensure this does not happen in future.

I have asked the email to be recalled, but you may still have a copy in your inbox. Please can I ask that you delete the email from your inbox and not use any of the addresses for other purposes. I have asked all recipients of the email to take the same steps.

A new email will be sent with recipient email details withheld which you can use to complete your rod catch return for the 2011 season

Once again I would like to apologise for this error. If you have any concerns please email me at salmon_licensing@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Regards
Andy Sadler

I didn't get the mentioned e-mail so i'm wondering just what they sent out?

It's basically saying that the email that went out had everyone's addresses in the 'to' field, rather than BCC'd as you should do when sending out to a mailing list. People would then have access to all the email addresses that it went out to and use them all for another purpose as they would have a value, e.g. trade promotion. Theyve basically dropped a clanger surrounding the sharing of peoples email addresses, you just sit back and wait for the spam now!

As PP mentions above the content will not have been the issue, more the way it was sent. An unopened email can be recalled without the recipient ever knowing, hence the reason you probably never saw the mail.

Cheers, Jon

Yeah I got the apology but didn't get the original e mail.

That's a marketing dream for anyone that did. How many rod licences are purchased per year? That amount of current information of a very specific market must be worth a few bob!
