Default Quite possibly the best ever line in a fly fishing book...

I just started reading "Where Bright Waters Meet" and had to share this line with everyone who has missed out on reading it:

The line "It was full of huge trout and equally huge pike, and we had a most exciting time with the former with a May fly and the latter with a gun."

Quite fantastic. Perfectly normal to go out in the afternoon sun and shoot sunning pike! How times have changed (fortunately)

No, the best line ever written about fishing and which every angler should have engraved on his heart was by the late Dick Walker. "Observation plus thought equals fish". You don't have to spend too long on here to realise how few have taken these few words on board.

Not exactly fishing but the principle applies.
On deer hunting,

" First find an area that contains plenty of deer"

Where the Bright Waters Meet, Written by an Irish Singer! H P Greene.
Your choice Would not be my favoured line from the book!

HOWEVER.

There is a line from another book that I really liked; and could relate to!! : John Aston (Grayson) "I Dream Of Jewelled Fishes" The line is on page 56, and it sums up how I feel, when fly fishing on my local stream.

Quote,

"It is a welcoming environment but gentle, and one where it is possible to be alone but never lonely" "

It is a hard feeling to describe, but once recognised, it stays with you like the memory of your first kiss"

Aston, is writing about the Lincolnshire Countryside.

My favourite book about fishing starts with the words "Call me Ishmael..."

When you think about it, it is a great line, and one that would be normal practice in those days, and it made me giggle when I first read the book.

Bob, that is without doubt a great quote.

The owner of one of my local carp waters controls pike on some of his other interests with a gun.

Fishing it ain't, different and exciting it must be. Bit gutting to hear about him shooting pike when I am sweating blood trying to get one on fly gear.

I like this line from the Complete Angler

God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.
Izaak Walton

All great. I should change my post to say 'most amusing' rather than 'best' - as it wasn't meant to conjur up a deeper debate on fishing quotes, it just made me chuckle somewhat
